Political Hypocrisy © Dr. Gary D. Lemmons, March 18, 2007 |

The antics in the Congress of the members attempting to direct the war in Iraq are just another example of political hypocrisy on the part of the liberal Democrats now in control, ever so slightly, of that branch of the government. The liberals believe the war to be lost, yet they realize that the preponderance of the American people will not support any action that will place our troops in more danger, even while disengaging. Consequently, the Democrats do not have the gonads to cut-off funding for the war, an act that would really terminate our part in the tragedy. Hypocrisy is rampant among the liberals. For example, the liberal banner proclaims the freedoms and rights of individuals within the society and against the economic corporatists. They defend the right of choice, which terminates the life of an entity that has never done them harm, yet they would prevent you and I from possessing, bearing, and using a firearm against a thug criminal bent upon our injury or destruction. However, hypocrisy is not a malady among the liberals only. The conservatives display a generous supply of it as well. Consider, if you will, the hypocrisy of the conservative point of view when it comes to the power of the 50 states with respect to the legalization of the medical use of marijuana. The March 14th ruling by a three judge panel of the 9th District Court of Appeals in the case of Raich, et. al. v. Gonzales, et. al., which held that California’s law legalizing the use of cannabis under the supervision of a medical doctor was trumped by the national drug laws (largely unenforceable because of the Bush administration’s incompetence in securing our borders), has assured all of us that we will be protected from those dangerous individuals with brain cancer, aggressive arthritis and other pain-centered and incapacitating diseases. Wow, we can all sleep better at night! With respect to the courts and the interpretation of the Constitution, both the conservatives and liberals are blatantly hypocritical. For conservatives, a judge or justice, who rules according to their philosophy, is a Constitutional originalist. Any other interpretation must be a judicial activist. Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh are particularly guilty of this hypocrisy. On the liberal side, judges or justices, who rule according to the liberal philosophy, are progressive, sensitive, and enlightened. While those who go in some other direction are clearly judicial reactionaries. Ann Coulter has become so erratic that they are considering naming her the poster child for PMS, but, at least, she is honest enough to admit that she wants activist conservative judges and justices. Looney as she may be, she is, at least, forthright. I can respect that. What a joy it is to watch the politicians and political pundits. Of course, they cannot all be rationale and intelligent like you and me, can they?!?
