A Sunday Morning Lesson

I started to post this week’s column and discovered that “The Mid-South Philosopher” website had expired!

Without any warning, my domain name registrant had simply pulled the plug on me.  What is more, my website host is not the same as my domain name registrant and, since I first signed on to this site in 2002, I was somewhat fuzzy on “user names” and “passwords.”

After about an hour of searching and slogging through the intricacies of domania and website hostland and the expenditure of 50 dollars, I am now back up and able to spew my barbs and quips and make a general literary nuisance of myself.  This site is secure until 2010.

There is a great lesson in this for me and for you as well.

In the post-modern cyberspace world of the 21st Century, we all expect that most things related to the computer environment of our lives will be automatically taken care of. (Gosh, did I just end a sentence with a preposition!?!)

Well, the fact of the matter is that there are no guarantees.  While the bank can credit the payment you owe them without difficulty, sometimes debiting that check you deposited on time becomes a puzzling task to them.

The lesson…pay attention to all business items with respect to online transactions.  Check credit card accounts.  Review bank statements. Read suspicious emails, but be cautious in responding.

And never…never let your domain name expire!
