The Rump Congress and the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) © Dr. Gary D. Lemmons, December 9, 2007 |

It is a mystery to me how that a nation with the intelligent and productive citizenry that we have in the United States can elect, individually and collectively, such a rouge’s gallery of incompetent leaders. Take, for example, the current rump Congress. While these fools have been sitting on their collective posteriors for the past two years, trying to make Georgie Bush’s life a misery (which, of course, he so richly deserves), they have managed to just about let time run out for dealing with that legislative idiocy of the 1960’s…the Alternative Minimum Tax! This little touted tax was passed by the liberals…excuse me…the progressives back in 1969 to make sure that rich people paid their fair share of income taxes. Back then, $100,000 income per year was rich. Today, it is lower, lower middle class. The morons in office back then did not tie the amount of income to inflation! Now, if the rump Congress doesn’t act, millions of Americans are going to suddenly be informed that they are rich and are going to see their income tax bills rise by $3,000 to $5,000! The good news is that the rump Congress will act. Even these imbeciles know that should a massive number of American citizens receive the tax bills that would be brought about if the Alternative Minimum Tax is allowed to hit the lower, lower middle class, the backlash would be tremendous. Who knows…Speaker Pelosi might end up wearing a Chick-Filet uniform and John Boehner might be delivering pizza for Dominos! What may happen is that the rump Congress will not act on the AMT until after Christmas. If that occurs, the entire time period for filing income taxes is going to shift, and if, by chance or protraction, one is entitled to a refund from the government, there will be great delays. What do you want to bet though that, if this happens, the rump Congress doesn’t put a provision into the law that extends the time when taxes owed are to be paid? In other words, these idiots are going to expect the American people to pay taxes even when it is impossible to know exactly how much is truly owed! I don’t know about you, but I am sick of politicians. I have voted for my last incumbent. If the excretion is in office, then I am against him or her. Only some immaculate event will ever entice me to vote to re-elect anyone! If the American people would put my electoral philosophy into practice, within 30 years we would see the re-emergence of some true statesmen instead of this conglomeration of horse mire we enjoy today!
