Justice Done! © Dr. Gary D. Lemmons, May 4, 2008 |

In the post-modern world, many have become skeptical of the American court system. Some of the decisions that are arrived at by judges, even Supreme Court Justices, seem ludicrous and unjust. It just doesn’t seem right that some mangy parasite on society should get away with some crime because of some technicality. What most Americans do not understand is that it is NOT the purpose of American courts to “do justice.” Rather, their reason for being is to “administer the law.” Now, hopefully, if the laws have been made by thoughtful and sincere legislators and if they are correctly administered by our judicial officials, “justice” will be done. But, sometimes it isn’t! Occasionally, “justice” is served. That is what happened in the Superior Court of Gordon County, Georgia, this past Friday, when a jury handed down a death sentence to Jerry Jones, Jr. Jones had pled guilty to the murder of four members of his estranged girlfriend’s family, including his own 10 month old daughter. This horrible crime occurred on January 4, 2004. He subsequently kidnapped two other children of his estranged girlfriend and fled. He was captured near Chattanooga, Tennessee, where, he attempted to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head. Unfortunately, he only damaged the lower part of his face and thus survived. The two children were unharmed. During the sentencing hearing, which took the better part of three weeks, attorneys for Jones argued that he was a mentally ill individual. They trotted out members of his family to testify that he had been treated badly as a child and had experienced more than his share of abuse and heartbreak. Fortunately, the jury saw through this mist of propaganda and saw the “dog”, Jerry Jones, Jr. for what he really is…a vindictive, cold, and brutal murderer. He was sentenced to death on all counts. Likely, it will be some years before, Jones is put down. There will, I am sure, be a number of appeals. Likely, the anti-death penalty organizations will come to the relief of Jones and help him fight to stay alive. Too bad, these bastards weren’t there to help the four people he brutally killed in 2004!
